Hot Cross Bun Facts

Easter is the time when most households ensure they have some hot cross buns in the cupboard. This is a tradition in the UK that spans back hundreds of years. These spiced, sweet treats are delicious and have become part of the Parsons tradition too. We hand make these delicious buns and get them out to our shops in early March, so everyone can make the most of this wonderful tradition. Here are a few facts that we’d found interesting, and we thought you might do too.

You can thank the Saxons for this iconic design. The cross was put on the buns to pay tribute to the goddess Eostre. Furthermore, the goddess Eostre is believed to be where the word Easter originates. Christians then adopted the cross as their own, as it symbolises the cross and the resurrection of Jesus.

Hot Cross Bun Myths and Superstitions

There are a few superstitions that circle these flavourful buns. According to British Folklore, Good Friday is a wonderful day for baking and serving up some delicious hot cross buns. This is because they will not go mouldy for an entire year! However, we’ve not been able to test this one out as our buns never hang around that long!

Another interesting tale relates to the seas. It was said that hot cross buns offer protection against shipwrecks. Therefore, sailors would like to have a few buns stored onboard when setting off on a voyage.

And Finally…

Finally, in the past, it was believed that these buns can protect against fire. This only works if a hot cross bun is hung up in a kitchen. It’s also important to remember to replace the bun each year.
